Alghero
Early in the morning we headed out from Palau across the island to Alghero. It was founded as far back at 1500 BCE. Picking up another friend in Arzachena. We left at 5am, and THIS was the sky.
We arrived about an hour and a half later near Alghero and stopped at the Nuraghe Palavera. A Nuraghe is a megaliths (Large Stone) complex that has been dated to as far back 5000 BCE. This one is dated to 3500 years BCE. At it's center is a limestone tower with an elliptical building and secondary limestone tower. There are multiple ruins around the center, about 50 circular dwellings.
Next stop along the way was Porto Conte. Beautiful tower that I took a picture of the Prius in front. Great picture of me with Capo Caccia in the background.
Drove to the top of Capo Caccia..
Arrived in the City of Alghero and had a wonderful time seeing the sights!
Basilica della Santissima Trinità di Saccargia
This church is the most
important Romanesque site in the island. The construction is entirely in
local stone (black basalt and white limestone), with a typical
appearance of Tuscan Romanesque style. The
church was finished in 1116 over the ruins of a pre-existing
monastery. The church was abandoned in the 16th century, until it was
restored and reopened in the early 20th century.
